Edwardsville was surveyed in 1869 and named for John H. Edwards, a general passenger agent for the Union Pacific Railroad, which tells you most of what you need to know about why the town is where it is. The railroad came first and the town followed it along the river.

The city was not incorporated until 1915, so the housing here spans a long stretch: a thin layer of early frame houses, a good deal of mid century building, and newer subdivisions filling in on the higher ground.
