Why the sheathing check matters
The reason we tear off rather than side over the top is simple. Siding over old siding hides whatever is happening underneath, and in a freeze and thaw climate what is happening underneath is usually worse than the homeowner expects. Once the wall is open we can see rot, failed house wrap, and old water paths, and fix them before the new siding covers everything for the next twenty five years.
