Merriam had 11,098 residents at the 2020 census, packed into a compact city that Interstate 35 runs straight through for about three miles. That corridor is the defining feature. Merriam is named in honour of Charles Merriam, at one time secretary and treasurer of the Kansas City, Fort Scott and Gulf railroad. The city incorporated as a third class city on October 23, 1950 and moved to second class status on January 18, 1957.
That timing tells you what to expect. Merriam is overwhelmingly a postwar city, and its housing went up in a relatively narrow window in the middle of the twentieth century. The upside is consistency; the downside is that large numbers of these roofs reach the end of their service life within a few years of each other, street by street.

AdventHealth Shawnee Mission is the largest employer in Merriam with over three thousand employees, and Seaboard Corporation is headquartered here. The corridors and districts we work in
Interstate 35. Runs through Merriam for roughly three miles and carries the commercial and institutional ground that defines the city’s tax base. AdventHealth Shawnee Mission and the IKEA site both sit on this frontage. These are large low slope roofs on buildings that operate continuously, so the work is scheduled around them rather than the other way round.
Johnson Drive. The main east to west street and the commercial heart of the city, running from the older storefront blocks out to the I-35 retail. The buildings at the older end are small, close set and mostly low slope. Behind them the residential streets start immediately, which makes access and staging a real consideration on this corridor.
Shawnee Mission Parkway. The other main east to west route, carrying commuter traffic across the north of the city toward the state line. The housing on either side of it is postwar and consistent in age. That consistency is why roof replacement here tends to arrive street by street rather than house by house.
Interstate 635. The northern connection toward the state line and Wyandotte County, and the route we most often come in on from our own shop. It puts Merriam a genuinely short drive from us. The commercial ground along it is a mix of light industrial and service buildings with flat and low slope roofs.
Turkey Creek. Not a road, but it organises Merriam as much as one does. The low ground following the creek through the city is where water management governs the whole job. On these streets we spend as much time on gutter capacity and where the downspouts discharge as we do on the roof itself, because that is what actually decides whether the basement stays dry.
The Antioch Road corridor. Runs north to south through the residential heart of the city, connecting the postwar streets to the commercial frontage. Compact lots, modest roof areas and pitches steeper than the square footage suggests. Mature trees stand close to the rooflines along most of it, which keeps gutters filling faster than the roof age alone would explain.
